Unfortunately, I did not take any notes, so I won't be giving
you a play-by-play. Having said that it has been
about a month ago, and the games are pretty set in my mind and I did take quite
a few pictures in the first two games, and I sort of trailed off on the pictures in game three.
It ended up being a long day, but that is for another post.

Turn 1:

My opponent had a hard time understanding how the magic
rules work it seemed as I had to help him out in determining what he needed to
do in order to setup the spells for his shamen.(always a bad idea to ask the
dwarf player on this) Once I got that sorted, we rolled for turns and I think that
I made him go first. First turn was pretty booring, just moving to the
objective. My opponent decided to take his massive unit of trolls and a Giant
through the woods for the rest of the game. He had limited magic through. He
did drop a rock with his Rock 'Lobba on one of my warriors unit and they fled
due in horror. With the General in the unit no less.

I had no problem rallying the fleeing unit of warriors. I
guess that they found their balls again. Other than that, I right hooked with
with my Ironbreakers towards the objective. Filled in with my GW detachment
where the warriors were to begin with. I also moved up the rest of my army. I
returned fire at the Rock 'Lobba and hit a crew member. My bolt throwers did
some damage to some rank and file(Black orcs?) and I tried to hit at troll with
my other one. Green one was the non flaming BT BTW. Crossbows took pot shots at
the orcs that they could see. Pretty standard so far.

My opponent kept moving the same routes as before. I don't
recall much magic happening this turn either, but I believe that he got of one
of his magic missiles and took out a warrior on my other larger unit. His magic

the side after trying to destroy my organ gun.

I rolled to get my Miners into combat, which happened no
sweat. I posted them up on the flank and got them behind the trolls. I
continued to move my unit up with my GW detachment approaching the objective.
Ironbreakers continuing with their right hook oblique on the flank. Warriors
with the general moving fast to catch up to the rest of the line. My whole
right flank got ready to take on the trolls and Giant. I continued to shoot at
the Rock 'Lobba with my cannon and I started to score some hits with it, but
not enough to kill the damn thing. My Organ gun started to open up but I
believe that I misfired on this turn on it. No damage, just miss the turn. My
Bolt Thrower killed a Troll and started to whittle down his forces along with
my Crossbowmen.

Miners. They held and took the charge. Everything else was creaping up to the
objective. I was able to roll well and fully stopped his magic this turn
burning the last of my Dispel runes on my Runesmith of Pain in the
Ironbreakers. My GW detachment stood no chance against this Giant, fled and was
run down by the Giant. My Miners put up a good fight but eventually had to run
and was run down by the Wolf Riders off the board.

From there I continued my plan of attack. I reformed my BSB
unit to get into the fight more as I was worried less of the trolls, as they
look to be bogged down in the trees for the rest of the game. I continued to
advance with my General's unit and my Ironbreakers to the objective. I opened
up on the Giant with both my Cannon and Organ Gun. I managed to nuke it
completely. I continued to whittle down the center with my crossbows left and
my Bolt Thrower did land a hit and took out a few of the far left flank unit
which were Black Orcs.

Turn 5:

We were on the last turn as our TO was calling time on us.
He managed to bring more of his units closer to the objective, got his Wolf
Riders back on the board, and continued to have his trolls bogged down in the
forest. No real magic to write about at this juncture. He did not do any
charges on his round that I recall. I was not able to take any more pictures as
we were focusing on the land round.

At my turn I did charge with my Ironbreakers unit on the
flank to his Black Orcs. I managed to take him out with copious CR on my side
and good CC from my runesmith in the unit.

The end of the game you calculate who is within the halo of
the objective and t and I had over 500 points worth of units with my Generals
unit and the detachment of GW close enough to the objective. He had nothing
close enough to counter my points. It was one sided, but not as much as it
could have been with more points camped around the objective like I could have
had.

It was quite a day trip from here in Charlotte, but that was due to the back roads to get there. I took a different route going home that lent me a faster trip home, I thought, but regardless it was about two hours to and from.

As far as the hobby store goes, it was nice location. Right in the middle of Aberdeen, NC which is a small town right between Pinehurst and what used to be called Ft. Bragg. It is right off of US1 and a little history of US1 is that it was the first highway stretching from Maine to the Florida Keys in the US. First established in 1025 and most of the buildings around town look to be built around that time period. There was obviously a lot of military around town but overall it was a nice sleepy old town in NC like what you would imagine Mayberry to be.

Hit Points Hobbies appears to have been located in one of these older buildings from before the war.(WWII) I got that impression form the hardware in the bathroom. The lock on the door was an odd chain lock that locked vertical with a "T" connection and two spigot's one for hot and one for cold water in the sink. Honestly I find that to be a novelty these days so I was ok with it. The shop has the usual game products, but instead of what I normally see with comic books, they had a whole room of video games. It was kind of like an arcade but only for more modern games with consoles hooked up to TV's. It was to a varying degree as far as which edition they had available. So you may find something like a Playstation 4 or 3 there instead of the newer editions for instance. I am not into console gaming so I cant tell just by the look. One other big thing that they were doing there that was different was that they offered a 3D printing service there. You could see the printers in one of the small side rooms that they had. They also had a few paint stations for someone to work on some models as well as I would assume advanced tools like an airbrush.

Overall it I thought that it was a fine store to visit. The general atmosphere and people working the store were nice folks. They do have a store cat so if you are allergic to cats, you are SOL. The cat smell was not bad, but it was faintly there. It makes the store smell more of a home rather than a store, and certainly better than some of the stores that I have been in. I guess that a new coat of paint and an annual cleaning would make things better but not by much. Here is their website with a picture section:

https://www.hitpointhobbies.com/

As far as the tournament goes, it was pretty decently run. All of us were rusty as hell in both playing games, but the TO did a good job in resolving disputes and such events. They kept us on track and got us to finish in a reasonable time in the evening. I have may be two critiques of the tournament management.

One was that they insisted that we use communal dice rather than your own. It is not a big deal to me, but who in the hell is the asshole who loads their dice to win at WFB? But who knows they may be down to that level. Another problem with it was that, the dice was weird colors so not easy to read. If this really is a problem, then I would suggest weighing the dice blocks of people and demand that we use Chessex dice, or if necessary give everyone a block of Chessex to use for the day. They had no problem with my artillery and scatter dice however.

The second was that on my last game my opponent and I were on the same table that we played our games on before. Meaning that he played game one and three on the same table and I played game two and three on the same table. It may not have been possible, but getting us on another table would have been nice.

This is their first time running a WFB tournament in a long time, so as far as hiccups goes, it was pretty small. I guess that they put this one out there to plan just as it was posted. They are planning a new event some time in January or February, and they promised that they will get to planning that a lot more sooner than they did this one, so I guess that they are working on it how. They also had trophies where one was a 3D printed dice tower.

The players were nice to play with. Almost all of us had lunch together at a brewery, and had a great conversation about painting over beer and burgers. Definitely about half were either current or former military, no surprise given the vicinity of the base. Overall I recommend the event that they put on.
Tiny Legionshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16304002270161640806noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4307595811931065986.post-12856946092030328312023-02-19T07:21:00.004-08:002023-02-19T17:53:25.141-08:00Craters and Dreadnoughts
We have had a wild ride so far at the start of the year. Lot of medical and business issues with my surviving parent put writing this post out of my mind. But better late than never. I have two new items to display on my blog.

First thing is my craters. I actually finished these a while back, and now I am going to put them up for display:

I used plaster as the form of the actual crater, painted them up using the paint formula from Hirst Arts on earth tones, and then gave them a wood stain finish. I like the look and I think that it will last for quite a while.

I also finished up a dreadnaught for the most part. It is still missing the varnish, but that is something that will come later when I have better weather here in a few weeks. Honestly it ended up going into Nobvember as well, but we will hold off on that. Here is all that I managed to accomplish:

That is in total 44 Boys, 5 Nobz, and 1 Warboss. A Total of 50 Orks with some kind of paint on them. Now there is a lot of work to do, and likely are not going to be able to see most of the work, as most of the green is base coated that looks too dark to see the difference between black and Dark Angel Green, but trust me there is paint on all of these little guys.

The front unit of boys are currently on the painting table right now. Both are the sluggas and Choppas from the old AOBR box. I am also using the Nobz from the box as the nobz for all of my units in this particular army. Most of the boys in the back have problems that I will likely have to clean off using Simple Green. I did not notice it at the time that I was painting on the green way too thick and it is marring the detail. Good news is that I have plenty to work on until I can get these guys ready for priming once again, like these two units.

These two are from the normal Orks box, one is a group of Ard Boys with Sluggaz and Choppas, and the other have the Shottaz. Both get a Nob from AOBR likewise. In addition to about the same painting treatment for the Nobz in the back, that is it. I would show you a pic of the Nobz, but the picture turned out terrible. Anyways hopefully more will be due from this lot here in the next year, but first it is back to the Crimson Fists. I do have an update on them that I will show off here next week, I wanted to give the Orks their due limelight for now. Until then.
Tiny Legionshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16304002270161640806noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4307595811931065986.post-78076645283704580672022-10-08T15:53:00.004-07:002022-12-24T10:07:11.648-08:00OrktoberI am still having trouble with the decals on my Space Marines. The decal manufacturers are kind of far and few between with some mediocre results or just not what I am looking for. I will give a full update once I get that sorted. Meanwhile I am still working on the rest of that squad and a new scout unit, but that is not the subject of this post. The subject of this post is the targets for the aforementioned Space Marines.

This month, being officially October, is also known as Orktober. It is a month where we focus on those green little monsters and finally get some of them wet, with paint that is. As someone who has plenty of Orks and need to work on them, I decided that I will change a few things up and get some paint down on them. I will be participating in Orktober by working on a few Orks that I have ready and in inventory. I already have been working on a few for a while as you can see here:

They have some shading and a few bits and pieces that need to be fixed, but they are very much along the way. Then I tried to figure out how to print out some decals for the squad markings. It took me a while to get a good print of the chapter badges. This was of course among other projects that I was working on during the past couple of months. Once I was able to do a test run on a dummy shoulder guard, I noticed that even with a good print, the decal looked terrible. The decal was so thin that it looked like a film on the shoulder guard. I was thoroughly disappointed at my outcome. I did find a company that does provide a similar decal sheet that should be professionally done, so I bought that. Once I get it, since they apparently print them as they get the orders, I will apply them and see how they work. Hopefully by the end of the summer I will have them and be able to finish the below models.

On another note, I did some more critical errors on my painting so I have quite a few models in the ole Green Stuff bath.

Sigh!
Tiny Legionshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16304002270161640806noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4307595811931065986.post-3066571632127948062022-04-09T07:49:00.001-07:002022-04-09T07:50:18.627-07:00Long Time Coming in an update.
Alexa, how do you spell Negligence. Sorry folks, you should know by now that real life got in the way of things. Nothing too important, just the usual elderly mom being a lot to handle with little time to do any hobby stuff let alone blog about it, and when I do, I tend to get into a perfectionist loop of always trying to fix problems that I see. That also does not include accidents. I did have one full squad almost done but then I ruined them when an errant paintbrush went across them and ruined my paint job. I also don't like to post pictures that are WIP usually. I like to showcase what I have finished. On the other hand, a PLOG may spur me to paint more if I start posting WIP's.

Good news is that I am almost done with most of a full squad and my dread from way back when. I cant use spray paint right now as the pollen is getting thick, so I am going to give them any final touch ups that I have to do and start with the decals on them. Hopefully they will be ready for the varnish before May is here. Anyways here is what I have so far:

I fully expect to have a lot more pictures once the varnish is on. The three not pictured had a few problems that I could not fix and had to give them the old "Simple Green" bath for them. I expect to have them as well as a Devestator squad done soon.
Tiny Legionshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16304002270161640806noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4307595811931065986.post-78968519858849317892021-01-01T18:09:00.001-08:002021-01-02T19:28:38.049-08:00
So with the new year upon us I am starting to do something that I really have not done much in years past. Set out goals in what I want to do with my hobby this year. Knowing my limitations on time and my standards of how I paint, we will certainly see if I can get all of this done let alone half of it. So without further ado here are my goals that I plan on working towards:

40K:

Crimson Fists: I have two companies of Crimson Fists and one is assembled and primed. Of that company I have decided to break it up into three elements. My goal is to finish the first element of this army this year, and this is the first project that I am going to be working on this year. The first squad has been finished as shown here. I have three months before it should get warmer down where I live, so I expect to get a lot of this done in the next few months, especially as I am still working from home until April at the earliest. After that I would also like to get the other company assembled, but that is not likely, and honestly the second element needs to be priority, but painting has a different schedule than assembling and priming. We will see.

Orks: The boys from above need an opposing force. I have collected quite a few battle force boxes over the years. What better than to have their hated enemy available to them whenever someone wants to learn a classic game at my domicile. These guys are second on the list for assembly and priming, so I expect to have them at least primed and some paint by Orktober.

Other Projects: I have a few other armies that I have been collecting but have not been putting together. I am not exactly sure where I want to go from here, but I think that my next two armies that I want to start assembling are going to be Cadian IG and Tau. I already have some of my Cadians broken down and at step 1 of my assembly, so they are in a good place to start as any. This is a definite we will see if I have the time to get them put together. No expectations of getting any paint on these two armies any time soon.

WFB:

Orc's and Goblins: More specifically Goblins. I have been assembling a Goblin army over the past two years,(cleaning the parts have been a slog) and I think that it is time that I start getting some of these greenskins painted. Most of this particular element of this army is primed and ready for some paint. I still have some left to clean and assemble for this part of my Greenskins that I want to get done before I move on to other assembly projects, but not that much. Biggest question is will I tire in painting so much green?

Beasts of Chaos: I would like to at least assemble some of what I have in stock and get these painted. I feel that this may be a good change of pace from all of the green and blue that I will end up painting this year. Kind of a stretch goal right now.

Empire/Brettonian: I am not that fond of the look of the Landscheidt that GW made for their Imperial armies for WFB. What I do like is the War of the Roses look, and I have a few options on that. Likewise I would rather use historical armies for a Brettonian army rather than hunt for 5th edition metals on eBay. My goal for these two armies is to find humans to match somewhat tp what we had in the 4th/5th edition for Empire and Brettonian armies, which can be harder than you think. My goal is to finally paint up my test models that I already got and do a comparison of what I have found so far and see if I can settle on a historical company or two that sells these periods. As I am a fan of variety, I would like to get at least two if not three companies that are in these periods. First three that I like so far are Front Rank, Foundry, and Black Tree Games. Should a company like Victrix comes out with a plastic version of the WOTR or HYW period, and fits what I am looking for, I would be game as well. I am not a fan of the Perry's miniatures right now as they are noticeably small compared to what I want to use. The painting may be a break in all the green that I may be painting. Once settled on a plan of action, I expect to purchase and start assembling what I can. Empire is first on the list of the two.

Terrain:

I have some scenery that I want to get assembled and painted, especially a stone tower that needs a paint job. While I would like to, I doubt that I can get a board done unless I manage to find a table/Miter saw to cut the wood that I need, but you never know and that can be knocked out in the space of a weekend.
Tiny Legionshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16304002270161640806noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4307595811931065986.post-2192395776647793482020-10-23T16:17:00.003-07:002020-10-23T16:19:09.259-07:00Lockdown Painting
As many of us are now confined to our quarters until further notice, I have noticed that a whole lot of us in the hobby of miniature soldiers suddenly have time to work on their hobbies, which you can honestly say that for just about most other hobbies. I would consider myself to be part of my group as well, since about half of my extracurricular activities involve being out among people. With that in mind I have been working on my backlog of Crimson Fists that need to get painted. I finally was able to finish my first squad of these all the way to placing decals and applying a hard coat on them. I learned a lot about painting in general, as well as painting space marines, once again while completing these. Lot of the mistakes that I did on these, I expect to not do again. I actually got these done last month, it was only now that I was able to get some pictures of them. Without further ado, here is my first Space Marines completely finished and coming to a table top near me.(whenever the hell we open up again)

Combat Squad A

So I had some trouble with the hard coat while finishing these guys up. While I am happy with the painting that I did on most of these models, I have some issues with the models themselves. If you notice, they are AOBR marines which will work in a pinch, but leave something to be desired when it comes to some of the details on the model. Most of that is hard to see in these pictures, but you have parts of this model without any undercuts. That does annoy me quite a bit. As mentioned earlier, there is an issue with the hard coat frosting on me. I think that was due to the varnish that I used and not the day, as it was a clear warm day with low humidity. I also screwed up on the decals when I was applying them on. I managed to make them more or less look like battle damage, but it is something that I want to try to avoid. This is on top of the fact that I am trying to use decals for both chapter and squad badges on any new models. I will certainly use them for many years to come as I build up the rest of my chapter, however when the time comes, I expect to retire these guys.

Tiny Legionshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16304002270161640806noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4307595811931065986.post-12305178274627173192020-06-22T15:39:00.000-07:002020-06-22T15:39:04.288-07:00Outragous!During the Covid lock down, I really don't have the "luxuary" of doing nothing but to just to paint my armies. My work shipped me home to work from home, and I still take care of my parent on the weekend. However, I am making strides on painting up some of my Crimson Fists. Lot of setback as well, but more in a painters block in getting the paint job just right for my taste. Did I mention that I am a slow painter? I should have an update soon when I get my first functioning unit under hard coat.

But that is not the reason for the long anticipated(I'm sure) update on this blog. I was perusing the Goblin section of E-Bay and found the following auction:

Goblin Auction

At the time of this writing a box of 20 goblins is going for over 200 dollars. Who the hell in their right mind is spending that kind of money on goblins like that? I know that people spend money like that per model, but those are small units like Terminators and the like. I have been collecting these kind of goblins for a while, so the good news for me is that I am predominately done in collecting this particular portion of the O&G army, so I don't think that I need a new set.(the operative word there is think.) Actually, I have enough for a particularly large Goblin army, and maybe two of them.

Having said that, looking at this auction, I am starting to take serious stock to see if I am missing anything else in my collection that I really want from GW brands. Likewise, I look forward for the days of a good 3-D printer so that I don't have to deal with these kind of prices, which may be coming down the pike soon enough. For those who have been paying attention, yes I tried to do another painting challenge this summer, and it did not end well. Unfortunately I got caught up in taking care of my parent's personal affairs all throughout the summer. The good news is that one of the events that we did was to take a trip abroad. It looks like things are starting to wind down with my parent however, which is good. Honestly, some of it has to do with me just not feeling motivated to paint right now.

As winter rolls in this part of the world, I will work in more time to paint what I have started on up. I also want to do a figure comparison once again for a new empire army so I will be working on a few projects this summer.

So I am going to do a do-over to last years painting challenge. Same parameters, same goal. The good news is that I am further along than where I was this time last year. Over the winter I did paint a bit more on these models. I was able to lay a lot of ground work on about half of the 80 models. Instead of being all dark blue, I now have a lot that are the base blue that I want to use, and red where they need to be. The bad news is that my surviving parent is the one that causes more stress in my life than anything else these days.

I am confident that this year we will have this project finished by labor day. Stay posted for pictures of my progress.

There is no way that this painting challenge will take place. I was able to get a few worked on before the sickness came on, however, most of the models don't have a single bit of paint more than what you see in the previous picture.

So in my infinite wisdom, I have decided to embark on doing something different with my time than the usual, which was to get bored watching Cable TV. I have decided to cut the cord and do something else with my time. For the most part, I have been reading books during the weekend and spending a lot of time online. As the summer is starting to get here in my part of the world, I have decided to do a few things with my spare time. For starters, I am going to do some more outdoor activities during the daylight hours, and go out a little more at night. However, I can only do so much of that at one time, and during nice days.

With that in mind, I have decided to get some painting done this summer as well. My goal is to paint what you see in the above picture before September 1st, to as high of a standard that I can and to include decals and varnish guard. As you can see most of these items are assembled already, and the first squad is almost done. Most of these units have not only primer coats on them, but also undercoats painted on using an air-brush. A few of these do need something like a new head or shoulder guard, but that is not what I consider to be a big issue. This comes to 81 figures, 7 tanks, and 4 skimmers. While not pictured, the supplement would be a metal Chaplain, and 4 scout bikes that I have not assembled.

As I have not done much in the form of painting in quite a while, I would consider this to be ambitious to say the least. That is where the tactics come in, I will be looking to do painting sessions on a daily basis, likewise we do have a few holiday's coming up as well as a wet weekend to work on these. Summer time where I live can get very hot during the day, so I will have some time during the afternoon to paint as well, having spent the morning being outside. I am sure in 120 days we will see if I am crazy like a fox, or just crazy. I will attempt to send up to date pics as the progress continues every month or so. We will see if having a challenge will make me pick up the paint brush once again.
Back then I commented that Age of Sigmar will be a massive disappointment. I will say that the jury is still out, but when you go to a game that is overtly a marketing ploy you are going to have all but a few people buy their product. There was always that issue with what GW produced (the only exception is WAB books) but this was heightened to an extreme thanks to our friends in Nottingham. Can we hire Bob the Dinosaur to give them corporate wedgies yet?

So GW is sinking further into decline. Mark my words you will know that GW is in their death spiral when they make a Space Marine movie.

So I have a new initiative that I have just launched this weekend, but before that I wanted to talk about a little about what has happened to our friends at GW because what they have done pertains to what I am doing now. I have been quiet on the trappings of GW for several years due to it being too easy to berate them and their anti customer practices.

So our friends in Nottingham have decided in their infinite wisdom decided to scrap the whole game of WFB that we all know and, for all intensive purposes, love. For those who have been hunting in South Africa for the past month, the Warhammer World was hit by a nuclear bomb or a meteor the size of New York and is no longer as it once was.

What replaces the game of WFB is a skirmish game of basically the fantasy version of space marines, in the form of a game called "Age of Sigmar". The game rules are basically a 5 page set of rules which is augmented by various elements in the form of "scrolls," and has most of the mechanics of 40K. I have no problem with 40K but I don't want to play a fantasy version of it. On top of the overly simplified rules, that get ever more complicated by these scrolls, the rule of "he who takes the meanest toys wins the game" is more blatant than any other time in GW's history. Depending on your taste, the models are well done, but they hold no such drive for me to buy them. That is not anything new as anything made for the 8th edition looked terrible. As far as the old models that they were producing, from what I get from the website, all old stock of WFB is now being sold off.

Perhaps I was a bit too soft when I said that it was with infinite wisdom, how about infantile, as only kids would be interested in this drivel. On top of that GW's exorbitant pricing is back in full force in that the starter set costs 125.00. Everything else get ever more expensive as you get hooked. You know how it works by now with GW if you have been a customer of theirs over the years.

I think that I have not been a Fantasy customer for GW in quite a while as their new models are too ostentatious for my taste even before this major change. What few items that I want to get will be from E-Bay from now on. I would rather have those old models that are "not cool" any more than what they are producing. Honestly with all of this I am more apt to say "So long and thanks for the fish."

Welcome to Classichammer:

So my new initiative is to start a website for folks who want to play previous editions. I call it www.classichammer.com where I will be focusing on 4th to 6th for WFB and 3rd to 5th for 40K. I may add some more editions, but honestly it is getting to a point of where I either am encroaching on other forums in the form of Oldhammer or to editions that I really don't care to get involved in, such as the 8th edition of WFB.

This was an old project that I have alluded to for a while on this blog, and probably too cryptic for most people to understand what I was talking about. It was part chance in that I wanted to start putting together this summer, and part because I saw some of the backlash from folks who hated AoS. While not specifically caused by GW's decisions, I feel that this site will benefit from the angst directed toward them. For that part I have to say "Thanks Games Workshop."

My plans are to do much more than the usual forum that most people have. I want to try to have a method of locating opponents as well as a convention or a games day. One step at a time however. I encourage anyone who is interested, especially disgruntled GW customers who have large obsolete armies, to check it out. Tiny Legionshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16304002270161640806noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4307595811931065986.post-47437210739708214172015-01-24T09:06:00.001-08:002015-01-24T09:12:09.442-08:00Alternative System: Fantasy WarriorsWell last weekend I managed to read through a new rules system called "Fantasy Warriors." I is a game system that was originally created by Nick Lund of Grenadier Models, back in 1990. These days a company called Mirliton has the rules as a free PDF. You can get them here. While they do have some additions, the rules really have not changed that much since when they were originally created.

For starters I would have to say that Mirliton is very kind for doing this. It is in the same thing as Mantic does with their rules, which is another system that I want to review as well. I do like some of Mirliton miniatures out there, but not a whole lot of them. Just a different style to what I like to see in a Model, I guess.

How it works:

When putting together an army in Fantasy Warriors, you do things that are rather different than what I have seen in other systems. You establish a command structure in your army and break up your army in commands. You have the main character as a warchief, which functions as the primary commander for the army, and is eligible to have his own command of troops. After that you have battle leaders who are subordinate to the warchief but lead their own commands. I didn't see any specific rules against a warchief commanding the whole army, however, I can see how that can get the army into trouble in this system. Obviously a change in what people are accustomed to these days.

The units are organized differently which effect their functioning through the game in that you have elite, veteran, average, poor and unpredictable as a quality, and than a type of disciplined, tribal, fanatic, and stupid. The characters are rather different as well in that some characters can be bought that really only augment someone like a battle leader or warchief. For instance a Battle Standard Bearer is just one guy that augments the battle leader, rather than being a separate character as in Warhammer Fantasy. There are also more variety of characters that can be bought.

On top of more and different characters, there are rules where you are eligible to scout and determine table sides and who has the option of going first. These are basically dice roles, however, using units designed for scouting can augment that roll. The catch 22 is that the scouting unit must be held back at the edge of the table basically when you start, and the whole command must scot, which is one of the reasons for multiple commands. They also have rules for day and night combat which can be effected in this phase as well.

Fantasy Warriors is a game that is a phase based rules system, like Armies of Arcana in that you do both sides phase before you move to the next phase of the turn. The various different phases that you and your opponent move through in a turn in order are threat, shooting, movement, combat, new order, influence, and command test. Most of these are pretty obvious phases of the turn. I have a hard time believing that anyone who reads this needs to have the shooting phase explained to them, along with combat, and movement. They have their own idiosyncrasies that make them different from other systems, and it depends on what you are looking for in a system as to whether you like them or not. I will point out that to hit and wound are similar to Warhammer but your dice throw is modified by a few more factors. The other phases of threat, new orders, influence, and command test do stand for a more in depth explanation.

Before I get to that, I believe that one of the concepts of the system that needs to be explained first and foremost in that every unit has more or less a standing order once they begin the game that they are ordered to carry out. They are attack, hold, and oppose. Attack is basically like a unit with Frenzy in Warhammer in that the unit will always move to combat, multiple combats are not allowed in this game. Hold obviously is an order where a unit will stay and defend their one spot, and react any opposing force once they are attacked. Oppose appears to be more like an order of harassment where a unit is mobile and basically under your general control. These orders can change once they are in contact with the enemy ranging from basically a counter attack to running away. There is no official fleeing the unit is just removed from combat. When you get the new order phase there is the time where you can re-evaluate the order that the unit has and change the standing order. Of course it requires a dice roll and can be influenced by the commanders at hand.

At the start of the turn, you have a threat phase, which is basically a psychology test to see if the unit is going to continue with their orders or route. This can be modified by any number of factors.

The influence Phase is where the battle leaders can step in and shore up a unit that is going to be removed from combat in the next turn.

The command test is more or less a test on the individual parts of the army to see if they route when the battle is going bad from what I gather. This is where separating commands is good in that one command can collapse while the others are still active.

I am sure that I am missing some things but this is the gist of the game.

Final Thoughts

I would have to say that this game is very clunky in terms of game play, and most likely considered by some as outdated. Personally I find it an interesting game system and I would be interested in playing it. However I would not put it on a as my most favorite games just yet. This may change after I play it but there is a lot that I did not go over still even though we are at over 1000 words right now. There is a lot of content and charts that are harder to memorize than what you have in Warhammer, and that is a worry. Hard to believe but I found a game system more convoluted and complicated than Warhammer ever was.
So I realized that I still had a blog that I have not been posting to in several months. Unfortunately life threw me two major health curve balls. Not for me but for people in my immediate family. Things have slightly improved on that front, but this part of my hobby life has been dead in the water for several months. I am afraid that my hobby resolutions are going to be on the two year plan. Believe that, and I have a bridge to sell you, real cheap.

With that in mind I am starting to paint regularly once again, and I have assembled and primed quite a bit of my space marines that I had in stock. With some discipline I can get them up as a painted force. That along with one or two more projects that I have hobby wise this winter and spring are in the works. Hopefully more later on this blog.

I noticed that I did not review the previous two moves of the Hobbit when I was going back in my blog, and I just mentioned the first movie in a post without actually reading it. Now that the whole trilogy is done, I figured that I would discuss the movie as a whole. The first thing that I have to say is that the whole damn movie series is too long. I am just going to call them move one, two, and three, since their names are too much to repeat throughout this posting.

The first one is just right, but could have been cut and moved up in the story line. The last two has way too much useless scenes. The second move could live without about a third of the move, and the last move could live without two thirds of it. I would call the third movie basically fantasy combat porn for two hours and 30 min of actual storyline. Movie two and three basically became the Legolas show, who was never in the book to begin with. I would expect for him to have a part in this series of the move, but it was basically three hours grand total of screen time between movie two and three, and I may be underestimating that. This whole move series could have been just two movies and we could all be on with our lives by now buying the extended CD's and watching it on Netflix, but NNNNOOOOOOO.(One of John Belushi's classic phrases, I am told) Perhaps that is the reason to string out fans for an extra movie. My only question is does Orlando Bloom have embarrassing or incriminating pictures of Peter Jackson?

On the other hand, there were things that I did like from the move. As a Dwarf guy, the battle of five armies was awesome with few exceptions. I totally liked how they put the dwarf army together. Barring the pikedwarfs, I almost blurted out, "Hey, I have one of those!" On an overall note, I did like the portrayal of the dwarves throughout the series for the most part. There were parts where I would have gone a less comical way with them, but overall it was as how I would have envisioned them to be. One glaring example of this is the barrel ride from movie two, but that whole scene was overdone in general and should have been on the conceptual chopping block. I liked how the Wood Elves army was put together, however I was expecting less armor on the elves, but small potatoes. Since this was on one of the previews that I have seen, I am not a fan of Dwarves using cavalry, even if they are commanders. That is my only problem with how the dwarves are portrayed. Since other items can be considered spoilers, I will not say that much more.

Bottom line this movie series goes way off line compared to the story, even more that the LOTR series. If you are looking for a movie that follows the story line in the book, don't go. Honestly, you should know by now that Peter Jackson does not follow the book, and that there is no way that he could fit the hobbit into three movies without going off the book. However if you want to see the end of the series and honestly don't care or have never read the book then by all means go. In short, I am not planning on getting the DVD's any time soon if anyone is asking.

Like many people I have had several months where I was not able to do much with my hobby. It is not specifically because I did not have the time, nor initiative to do anything. I have actually worked on getting a lot of my space marines built up and ready for priming. However, we have had record cold even down here in the South of the US and good luck getting primer on anyone's models. Now I have to look forward to getting pollen on my models if I go out and prime the models until the next month or so.

On another note, I have been reading up on Armies of Arcana, which is the next installment of my posts on alternative systems. Armies of Arcana is a system that I wanted to review for a while, and I would say that it is a system that does show a lot promise on many fronts, and provides a few interesting ideas.

How it works

This is a game that is very different from the standard GW games on many fronts. Instead of a turn system where you do all of your phases of the game and wait for your opponent to finish their turn, it is phase based system in that you each do your movement phase, and move on to magic, shooting, and Close Combat. You roll who goes first per turn as opposed to at the start of the game. Movement is virtually the same as in WFB of yesteryear, but you can skirmish any unit that you want and neither march nor charge moves are allowed.(Something that I will talk about later) Magic is actually more like how 40k Psykers work but within the confines of one phase rather than throughout the game. Shooting and Close Combat phases are more streamlined as opposed to GW's, where it is boiled down to one roll for every attack basically. To wound rolls are more like modifiers to the to hit roll. Other than that it is pretty similar to how WFB plays. Fleeing works more like it did back in the 3rd edition of WFB where you actually have to kill everyone in a unit rather than just destroy the whole unit by outrunning them. Catching up to a fleeing unit will not scatter them as in WFB but rather you get a free attack without any response.

What I like

After reading through this game system, I really do like how they handled what is called "Step up" in WFB. You are allowed to attack back but with a -1 to your roll. I would equate this to a -1 to hit and you cant use any modifiers by your weapon. It has been a while since I read the 8th edition of WFB, but I don't seem to recall step-up working like that, and honestly if it worked like that I would have no problem with it. I am more intrigued as to how the phased based way of playing works more than anything else. Everyone complains that your guys "just stand there and take it" when it is not your turn. This is a way to alleviate that issue. They also have a way to create that specific monster or army that is not already in the rules, and new armies are popping up every time from online. Likewise they already have Roman and Greek army lists available, so if you ever wanted to see how your friends Greek army matches up against your Elves, there is a way to play that. Most importantly, they are not using this book to sell miniatures like GW seems to do with their Basic Rule Book.

What I don't like

I am not a fan of the lack of a marching or charging move. That seems to me like it can get boring. It seems that moving your normal move for a charge is unreasonable given that a charge is supposed to represent your troops running in to combat. On another note they have their units move with more movement than what you see in WFB. They have artillery shoot every other turn as a rule. That seems unreasonable to me. As much as I find it interesting that you only roll once when you attack, I think that it provides for not as much nuance as we used to have.

Overall

Overall I would definitely like to test drive this set of rules from what I have read. It has a lot of interesting ideas and concepts that I want to try. Tiny Legionshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16304002270161640806noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4307595811931065986.post-11376408370270117442014-01-04T16:54:00.002-08:002014-01-04T16:55:13.193-08:00Happy New YearWith this new year, I took a look at what I was able to accomplish this year on the gaming front and it was rather slim. I did play a few games of 40K and got more involved in that, however my painting did not go far, nor did my historical or fantasy gaming went far. I have a few rule systems that I have not been able to make a review as I have promised as well as do much in the form of blogging. With all of that in mind I have decided to have a few new year resolutions on the gaming front.

1: Figure out a way to play WFB from the previous editions: I do have a few friends who like the game from previous editions more than what we have now. I need to link up with them and try to set up a few games with them. I have a few other ideas on this front as well. I want to try to do a game a quarter if I can, but honestly I believe that I can do one per quarter of historical easier. If I can do either I would be happy.

2: Actually Paint some models: I have done almost no painting, which is mainly due to my current living situation is not that conducive to painting. I will try to figure out something however. My goal is to paint up my battle company of Space Marines, which has other problems than me not spending the time on them as I want to. I will actually make them a FULL battle company as well, but for now I just got a few models that I am somewhat happy with after priming and base coating.

3: Read and review more alternative game systems: This is just me finding the time to sit down and read the damn systems and write about them.

4: Blog more DAMN IT! If I am doing my first three resolutions I will have plenty of things to blog about.

Lets see if I am able to do it. On another note I hit 10,000 hits on this blog. I want to thank everyone for reading what I have to say. I do appreciate that you are reading and a few are actually creating a dialogue. That many hits after 2 years does not seems like much to some, but I consider it an achievement. Thank You!Tiny Legionshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16304002270161640806noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4307595811931065986.post-9679158276731558772013-10-07T09:47:00.000-07:002013-10-09T13:50:49.509-07:00Apocalypse Gaming and handling big games

(Next time I am bringing my Wagner)

Well I had my first Apocalypse game the other weekend, and it was rather fun on average. It was a 6k game with me and two other guys that had space marines, while the opposing force had two guys running a Tyranid force. We played for four rounds after six hours and basically took turns wiping out one half of each side, with me in the center dealing with a few monsters. I guess that Space Marines loss but it was one of those things where another turn and it would be a different story.

All in all it reminded me of playing larger multi player games back in my days of playing WFB. They are the fun to do on occasion but they have the same problems in my opinion. Basically it comes down to how fast and comfortable of a player you are, in order to have an enjoyable game. I would not call myself an expert, and I feel that I need some more experience in standard 40K before I take on another Apocalypse game. Thus the reason why I don't recommend a game like this to anyone until they get experience in playing. Playing fast and confident is a requirement in order to make the game go smoothly in a game like this where getting bogged down is easy to do.

On another note, I am not sure that having different number of players is a good thing. Usually when I play these games, I am usually ranking up against one guy and we never finish the game to the last model, so I rarely ever get to play other players in a game like this. This is different, since I was in the center and attacking both opposing players at once. The fun part is that I distributed playing against each other, but the bad news is that I have to vie for the attention of my opponent with my two other cohorts. This lead to some confusion and having us wait on each other.

All in all I would do it again, however like always, I want to try to do it with just me in command of the army. It is one of things that partners in this situation causes hindrances to each other. Like the old saying "Too many cooks spoil the broth."

(Fitting given the Sci-Fi Theme)

I haven't talked much about my 40K collection, or much of anything for that matter in the past three months. That damn real life again. 40K was not a game that interested me much when I was younger. I am not much of a fan of the Genre when it comes to what we have in the Media. It is something that really didn't appeal to me. I do like the classical movies like the original Star Wars, Dune, and of course this.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8nPhsfYS5U

Recently what has driven me towards Sci-Fi is the Honor Harrington Series. For those who don't know, it is basically like reading CF Forester interplanetary. So that is my hook that opens up my mind to the Genre as of late. Over the past few months I have been playing about half of a dozen games of 40K. Space Marines are the army that I am currently playing with a Crimson Fist theme and play style. After these games there are some issues that I have with the current edition of the game, however I would say that overall it is a system that I am liking more than Fantasy. I won't belabor my disappointment with the 8th edition, since that has been expounded on in an earlier post.

I espoused long ago that I would take my lessons of the past and limit my scope of what and how I do my purchases. I do plan to keep that pledge with my space marines for the most part. I have about 2/3 of a company that I am working on now. I don't plan on getting anything new until all of this is up and running for Space Marines. In addition to that, I am setting aside some time in my busy life right now to get some painting done. Given how slow I am of a painter as well as the summer being as busy as it has ever been for me, it will certainly not happen overnight. I will be posting my progress with this army.

Over the past two months or so I have been very busy with other parts of my life and little for me to write anything down here. Apologies for that, but I have not been resting on my laurels. I have had a few games of 40K as well as find and buying up some 4th edition GW Fantasy Orcs. In my recent forays into collecting these classic GW models, I have come across a few models that are multiples of each other. That is rather normal given the ranges, however, my attempt is to avoid using the same model over and over again in your army. It does tend to get redundant as well as boring painting the same damn guy. In addition that it just is not what I want to collect in an army. Of course I have a lot less of a problem if I can find no two alike guys for each regiment at least. I can deal with a few of the same model in an army as opposed to a few of the same in each unit. I can always say that there is "that guy" in each unit. This comes to the concept of handling doppelgangers in your army. I think that we do have a few trick depending on which kind of army that we are dealing with.

Army choice is something that I think can make a difference. For instance any army that is either an undead army or fully armored army, as in Chaos Warriors, I believe that it should not that big of an issue. I would still try to avoid redundancy when possible, but a skeleton is a skeleton. They are by design uniform in appearance. Zombies can be an issue, but can be overcome through creativity. In the same idea, with uniform units like Elves, that are all kitted with the same uniform and helmet, I think that even in that situation it works. Given that I am working on Space marines right now, I have to say thank god for power armor and helmets.

Painting may help out as well, but mainly for humanoids. Basically changing the hair color is what makes the difference more or less. This is something that should be used sparingly, however. From my experience with my dwarves, even when you paint a face and beard a different color, they still seem redundant even with different bodies on them. Thus the problem with flowing hair in my mind. It makes the job harder to avoid doppelgangers, in my humble opinion.

Different manufacturers is a very good way in handling doppelgangers in my experience. The hard part is finding a suitable manufacturer that is comparable to your collection. With humans, I think that you can get away with a lot with the multitude of historical manufacturers out there, depending on what your tolerance is. I have no problem with difference in height, however if they are supposed to be the same build, I expect them to be the same build. I am not looking for freakishly shaped hands or very thin guys. Basically I am not looking for Romans to look like these guys when the norm for every other manufacturer's Romans is as tall as the Dwarf's feather:
With all of this in mind I have come to a bit of a dilemma in some fashion. The Orcs that I have been collecting have a good range, however, I seem to be having trouble finding a good variety on some units like the classic black orcs pictured here. Some of these tricks will not work. Painting is not an option, nor is their any other manufacturer's that I think will look comparable to these characters.(although I may be persuaded) They don't have enough armor to hid behind like other models, so I guess that I need to be more creative with these characters, or do something like put them into regular units and find something else for Black Orcs if I must have Black Orcs. Needless to say there is more for me to ponder with this army as I am collecting them. Of course my knowledge on the orcs is rather scant during that time, so there may be more GW figs out there than what The Stuff of Legends has in their archive. I believe that I have already found one big-un that is undocumented by these guys so hope springs eternal for the Black Orcs.

However I was able to get a game in of 40K using the 6th edition last Sunday. It is my first game and while interesting, we had a lot of distractions so it was not a great game to gauge whether it is an edition that I am fond of yet. We were playing a 1K game and it took us over 4 hours to play. One of the main distractions is that an old friend of mine dropped by the store that I have not seen in a few years.

Honestly I was thinking of him as of late and wondering where had he been and if I should try to contact him. It is kind of a chance encounter like what you read in the appendix of the LOTR with Gandalf and Thorin. My fellow Roman antagonist for WAB told me last month that he was rather incognito due to real life issues that are occupying his time. I know that he was not a fan of the current edition of WFB as I am, and had really not been active in any of the forums that he and I would frequent online. As of late however he has been on TMP, so at least I know that he is still alive.

My old friend and I of course struck up a conversation about 40K and WFB. One of the topics of conversation was also the idea of trying to get together to play 6th edition once in a while, since we still had the capabilities to play the game. Not to leave my opponent out in the cold, but he knew my old friend well and they conferred over an idea for a 40K apoc. game in the future. All in all it was a pleasant afternoon and needless to say I was glad to get out of the house for the time. It is my hope that some good ole 6th edition game are on my horizon.
